The annual Treasure Hunt and Barbecue, traditionally held in late May or early June, is generally seen as the start of the clubs summer diving activities. This gathering allows the members, both new and old, as well as their families to meet and renew the friendships that may have lapsed over the cold winter (well at least for the wet suit people). Those who brave the winter waters have a chance to brag about their exploits, and others can tell tales of extraordinary adventure in far away lands with warm water and visibility that makes some local destinations seem down right unusable when they return. But make no mistake, if we can tolerate the cold water, we will be in diving before this event. |

Our summer charter season starts near the beginning of June with a weekly dive normally scheduled each Wednesday evening until shortly before the pumpkin dive (late October). Most dives are rated for basic open water, but we do try to schedule an advanced dive each month. Most of our dives have been in the Kingston area, but we do attempt to head down river to Rockport or Brockville each month as well, to keep exposing our members to different areas and styles of diving. The details:
- Every Wednesday at 1730 hrs (departure) from the docks at Northern Tech Divers in Collins Bay. Charters may leave at 1700 in the fall due to shortening sunlight hours.
- Organizers: Kim Sararas Activities Coordinator )
- Cost: $30.00 (Pricing may vary depending on Operators and Dive destinations.)
Charter schedule can be found in the Online Calendar. |

- Current diving year club membership required to reserve spaces on charter.
- Pricing will be announced with the charter advertisement.
- Charter leaves at the time designated in the announcement email (generally 1730 hrs).
- Minimum 6 divers per charter. Maximum is 12 divers. Numbers may vary depending on charter operator used.
- Dives are weather permitting.
- Reservation Process. Spots on a charter are reserved by email only. The order is determined by the order that email is received responding to the advertising for the dive.
- Overflow. Any member that has emailed the coordinator before the deadline and does not get on the boat gets an automatic spot on the following week's charter. This privilege cannot be carried forward more than one week.
- Members at other Base Dive Clubs. Any current ( paid up ) member of another Base club will be entitled to the same services as any member receives at the Dolphin Scuba Club, i.e. they can reserve a spot on the boat, and rent equipment from the club. This assumes occasional use only.
- Guests. A club member can invite a guest to go on a club dive. The priority given to the guest will be by the order of when the reservation is made for the member. For example: if the member’s reservation email is the 10th to arrive and he/she has one guest then the guest will be #11. This assumes occasional and infrequent occurrences. Anyone who wishes to participate on club dives more than once or twice should become a member. The coordinator or executive may choose to limit guest participation at any time. It should be noted that the club has no responsibility or liability for guests. The guest should provide evidence to the charter operator of a valid dive certification. This is not needed for club members as this was provided at the time of membership registration.
- Weekly dive policies may be changed by the Dolphin Scuba Club without warning or notice.
- Any exemptions to the above policies are at the discretion of the Dolphin Scuba Club or its representatives.
The Fine Print
Because we have to charter boats and pay people to pull off these events a deposit will be expected when you book and is largely non-refundable without finding a replacement diver. Last minute cancellations for other than family emergencies or operational deployments will be looked at unsympathetically.
If you have booked a space and can't make it, please let the organiser know. We may have a waiting list. For each specific event actual sites and pricing may vary from that described depending on the qualifications of the participants and the weather that day. |

During the summer season we try to arrange one or two multi-tank dive charter days. These events allow members to make trips to wrecks and areas that we would not normally have access to on our regular charter schedule. These day trips (usually on a weekend) are a great way to get away from the regular grind of the week and socialize with a diverse group of people that all have diving in common. You might even pick up a few new techniques or ideas to try out. Unfortunately for some, the very nature of the multi-tank charter day, tends to make most of the dives more suitable to the Advanced Open Water classification (deep, borderline night, etc.). We have had some days that were not rated this way, but it is unusual. If you are looking for a another reason to get that AOW certification, this is a good one. |

Our closing event for the summer season is the Pumpkin Dive. Each buddy team is responsible for providing a pumpkin and creative minds.
This fine specimen of pie making material is then submerged and when it returns to the surface it has been transformed into a work of art by the dive pairs skillful handling of the cutting implement carried on each dive (knife, shears, kind of hard to do with a z knife I would think).
These fine specimens are then put through an impartial judging process of a committee with a keen sense of pumpkin carving history and requirements. The grand prize winner of this event takes home the honour of bragging for a year that they are the Supreme Grand Master of underwater pumpkin modification.

During the off season the club makes use of the pool at the Kingston Military Community Sports Complex approximately once a month for pool sessions to keep skills from getting rusty, to try out new gear that we got for Christmas/birthdays/just because, and to acquire some new skills from our training staff who are involved in a continuous quest to make us into more skilled and capable divers (lets not forget it helps with the diving withdrawal).
The high point of this lull in our scheduled diving program is the ever popular Scuba Olympics, a unique set of events to test your scuba skills as well as just plain old good luck (just stuff some paper towel in your mask and see how easy it is to find a dime in the pool). |

Another of the monthly events during our off season are the informal gatherings to discuss topics that are of interest to the members.
These sessions have covered everything from decompression theory and how it applies to recreational diving, taking underwater photographs, and trip reports of the members lucky enough to head south (this is a great way to get info on charter operators, hotels, and the dive sites that you should not miss when you travel). |
